As some of you may know Richard Holsten, Johnny’s Lighting Designer, passed away on Monday January 14th 2013. We will be posting tributes for Richard here as we receive them.

From Richard’s stepdaughter Michelle. An untitled poem written by Richard:

My Heart is in the mountains of my youth

Those peaks that, lofty, stand as sentinels

Drawing me to stands of pine and chuckling streams

Singing praise to God, Creator and Master

Who gave that we might Joy.

Sharing all, His plan,

with those that love and cherish.

Giving all to those who would but ask.

Gentle breezes filled with love

Transport a heavenly perfume of Nature’s gift

To all who would but heed the call

Of love for fellow man.

Hurting none, loving all,

Gifts to self and God.

This is why we’re here my friend

For the glory of God

And salvation of us all.

From Richard’s sister, Evelyn:

My big brother, Richard, was always my hero.  I remember being so proud of him watching him as “Biff” in “Death of a Salesman” at Idaho State University.  As time went by and his career developed, it was very exciting and special to know he worked for Johnny Mathis.

He was generous and kind to all.  Richard put together a coin collection of coins from all over the world for my children.  Later on, bringing our mother to visit in Oregon, he bought big stuffed bunnies for his three great nieces and nephew.  They still have them.  My handicapped Grandson still sleeps with his, refusing to give it up at the age of twenty.

When my husband cut himself while cutting wood with a chainsaw, Richard took it upon himself to clean up the pickup Jack had driven to get help for himself, to save me from that burden.

These are just a few of the examples of the many acts of kindness and generosity I witnessed.

Richard was quick thinking, funny and warm.  It was always a special time to have him come and visit.

A light went out when he left this world.  He will be missed so very much by his entire family.
